Well history

WRITTEN BY THE NORWEGIAN OFFSHORE DIRECTORATE

General

Exploration well 2/8-17 A is a sidetrack from well 2/8-17 S which drilled a salt induced anticline on the western edge of the Piggvar Terrace 20 km Northeast of the Valhall Field. The decision to drill the sidetrack well was made when well 2/8-17 S was abandoned due to hole problems that prohibited a full evaluation of the structure. The primary objectives of well 2/8-17 A were the Late Cretaceous Ekofisk and Tor chalk Formations, same as in well 2/8-17 S, but it was decided that the sidetrack should evaluate a more down flank element of the Trud prospect than in well 2/8-17 S. Well 2/8-17 A was planned to TD in Permian evaporites immediately underlying the chalk.

Operations

Exploration well 2/8-17 A was kicked off from 1690 m in well bore 2/8-17 S with the jack-up installation "Transocean Nordic" on 18 January 1998 and drilled to 2838 m where mud losses and circulation problems resulted in lost hole. A technical sidetrack, 2/8-17 A T2, was kicked off from 1952 m in well 2/8-17-A and successfully drilled to target TD at 3145 m (2853 m TVD RKB) in Permian evaporites. The well was drilled with "ANCOVERT" oil based mud from kick-off to TD.

The 2/8-17 A T2 well penetrated the Upper Cretaceous Ekofisk and Tor Formations, and a thin Lower Cretaceous interval before reaching TD in the Permian. There were no oil shows and no cores were taken. The Cretaceous interval was evaluated by a comprehensive wire-line logging program, which confirmed the absence of hydrocarbons in comparatively low porosity chalk. No fluid samples were taken. Well 2/8-17 A T2 was permanently abandoned as a dry hole on 21 February 1998.

Testing

No drill stem test was performed.

About this data

Norwegian Offshore Directorate (Sodir) FactPages, mirrored nightly and used under the Norwegian Licence for Open Government Data (NLOD). Depths are metres along the wellbore from the kelly bushing unless a row gives its own unit; older cores are filed in feet. A zero the Directorate files for an unmeasured pressure, density, or temperature is shown as a dash.
